Russian SME companies double their cybersecurity spending
Ekaterina Alexandrova | 01.10.2020
According to a survey by Kaspersky Lab, over the past 12 months, Russian small and medium-sized businesses have spent an average of RUB 4.7 million on securing their corporate perimeter. each is almost twice as much as in the same period a year earlier (2.4 million rubles).
The survey “Information security of business” was conducted in June 2020, 5266 IT specialists from 31 countries, including Russia, took part.
At the same time, the total share of spending on cybersecurity for the SMB category has not changed: as in the previous 12 months, it amounted to 20% of the total IT budget.
The survey results illustrate the consequences of the pandemic: those small and medium-sized businesses that were able to survive and restructure their work in time in the context of the coronavirus are forced to spend more on IT and information security. One of the main drivers of investment in information security was the need for business to improve cyber literacy of employees – more than 40% of all survey participants said that this was the determining factor for their company. Every fifth respondent noted that the decision to invest in strengthening information security was made by a cyber incident within the organization, including after data breaches. In 2020, the average cost of a data breach loss for a small company was RUB 1.9 million.
For 70% of Russian companies, the issue of data protection is the main problem related to cybersecurity. Another 59% are concerned about the lack of awareness of the state on the topic of information security and 43% – the cost of ensuring the security of complex technical environments.
